I AM A WALL
DIESEL WALL: Contemporary Art Award
Milano 2004

From far, at first sight, all you can see is the writing I AM A WALL. Then, a bit closer, the eyes focus the starry space within the letters, like holes within the wall. This space is taken from an astronomic photograph that so far is the maximum penetration distance of the NASA Hubble Telescope: it's the deepest portrait of the visible Universe, billions of light years away, which means the most distant point ever sensed by the human eye. This is the starting point of a deep glance, the awareness of your point of view, of your own identity: the wall is aware of itself, gains freedom and therefore vision. I AM A WALL represents the awareness of yourself in relation with the other's identity. It's this feeling of being naked in front of things that give us back reality and identity. The wall is no longer functional, it doesn't wear a mask anymore, it doesn't show anything apart from itself.
